WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE ARCHITECTURE ?
It's a funny story as I had never planned to be an architect. It was just that all the other career options got cancelled one by one leaving sports and architecture behind. All I was sure of was that I wanted to do something creative and fun and not too much to do with reading and hated anything to do with accounts. Medicine was a big no for me as the sight of blood was the most haunting thing when I was a kid. The only love was for sports then and I still have the same, but sports did not have that many career opportunities at that time and the only thing left was either architecture or engineering. I tried my luck at the entrance exams, got a good score and finally decided to go further with it and then was no looking back. Also what excited me was that architecture and designing is probably the only field that facilitates you to try out something new every time. It keeps you excited and curious at the same time.
WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?
Keeping it simple, elegant, ahead of time, functional and striking a balance between aesthetic and functional values. To me architecture and interiors go hand in glove, in the right balance they can combine to create timeless masterpieces. Shahen Mistry Architects (SMA) works with a philosophy to provide tailored lifestyle-centric solutions of exceptional quality. We take pride in the fact that we are not confined to a signature design style. This enables our multi-talented design team to create solutions which meet the lifestyle and desires of the client, while respecting cues given by the established "architecture" of the environment.
WHAT IS THE MANTRA THAT YOU'VE RELIED ON IN BALANCING FUNCTION WITH AESTHETICS?
It needs to start by keeping it simple and understanding the site and clients needs. Putting ourselves in the clients' shoes help us organize the spaces better; sometimes designing with your heart helps strengthening your beliefs and more often than not will help you balance the aesthetics with the functional.
TALK ABOUT THE SKILLS THAT HAVE SERVED YOU BEST IN YOUR CAREER.
The 3 P'S: PATIENCE, PERSISTENCE AND PASSION together with belief that you can achieve what you desire.
WHAT ARE THE THINGS A BUDDING ARCHITECT SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO WHILE HANDLING PROJECTS? WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU ARE THE DO'S AND THE DONT'S IN THIS FIELD?
In this field, one needs patience, persistence and passion which will help you conquer most of the challenges you face. Be critical of your own work as it will help you grow better and faster in this field. Be bold in taking right decisions and believe in your design sense (which needs to be updated from time to time to stay ahead of the current trends); pay attention to planning and details. If you are well organised, you get good results; don't be shy and afraid of failures as they will only make you stronger and more confident. Create spaces and build forms which have a purpose and meaning, spaces that will impact the lives and change them for the better.
MENTION FEW OF YOUR NOTABLE PROJECTS AND WHY THEY ARE CLOSE TO YOU.
Every project that we do we treat as our own, so it's very difficult to choose a few. Every project comes up with its own challenges which we have been able to overcome and make our clients happy and it is truly them who have helped SMA to reach where it has reached today. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF INDIA'S ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
Time is moving fast and architecture is developing. We have moved into the era of HI-TECH and smart solutions which is impacting our lifestyle both in a good and bad way. We, as architects, also need to constantly reinvent ourselves to keep up with the changing trends. We need to get more organised and collectively sit, collaborate and start planning for better and more concrete long term solutions which will help change the lives of citizens for the better.
WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION IN DESIGN?
"LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND YOU WILL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE". The passion for this field inspires me to explore new possibilities and find inspiration in things and people around me.
WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVOURITE ARCHITECTURAL/DESIGN PIECES AROUND THE GLOBE?
Quite a few structures have inspired me, starting from the Great Pyramids to the Great Colosseum. To imagine how they were built at that time without technology and still standing through the test of times, modern structures like Frank Gehry's The Guggenheim Museum, Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia etc.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT DESIGNING?
Playing cricket at professional level, travel and explore new places whenever I get free time and then most importantly spending time with my family and kids all of which keeps me energized and helps me focus on my work too.
SHARE SOME OF YOUR VALUABLE ADVICE FOR OUR READERS TO GET INSPIRED OF.
"Architecture is more than glass, steel and concrete. It's about solving problems and understanding the context of puzzle beyond defined borders of site. It's the practice of delivering solutions that fit within the larger whole while creating greater meaning than the sum of the individual parts. Architecture is a living story of how society's values are reflected and affected by the built environment. It's the practice of giving birth to form and function from concept and purpose, giving shape to light and shadow, moulding the earth and casting permanence into existence in order to give purpose and a meaning to space. Architecture is the story of civilization's past, present and future, inspiring innovation, growing community and improving quality of life..
So the question is...
How are you contributing to that story ?
What inspires your vision?
What challenges can you transform into opportunities?
Who does your work serve?
What do you dare to dream possible?
THE REAL QUESTION IS.......WHAT'S YOUR STORY "
