A TALK WITH INTERIOR DESIGNER KANIKA BAWA

Updated: Aug 1, 2019

  • WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE ARCHITECTURE/ INTERIOR DESIGNING ?

The idea of ‘’TRANSFORMING SPACES” as a teenager had left a huge impact on me; seen a lot of episodes of BBCS- ‘CHANGING ROOMS’ and was fascinated  by the makeovers n GIFTING NEW LIFESTYLES to individuals-seeing the difference in before n after.

Besides since childhood I have been surrounded by my uncles who have been town planners, architects, industrial designers. SILENT INFLUENCERS

Understanding what a huge influence designers made to humanity.

  • WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?

According to me,

· “The World is not Black, White + Grey only,we have a huge variety of hues-hues should be explored to maximize the space anatomy of each project to its hilt.

·  Material Truthfulness, I believe each material must be used in its true original nature which adds its distinctive quality to a project.

· Space is not a constraint; it exists only in the mind, space has potential for design always.

· Evolve. Create. Define’ – decoding design is my mantra in a nutshell.

· Also  our contemporary designs must give back to our Indian roots -integrate Indian arts n crafts skills in a new mould n give impetus to our artisans.

  • WHAT IS THE MANTRA THAT YOU'VE RELIED ON IN BALANCING FUNCTION WITH AESTHETICS?

'MAKE LESS DO MORE WORK -MINIMALISM.’

  • TALK ABOUT THE SKILLS THAT HAVE SERVED YOU BEST IN YOUR CAREER.

Multi-flex skills, be it colour combining, product designing, interior styling, soft furnishings design, visual merchandising. Design has only commas for me; so much more to discover.

  • WHAT ARE THE THINGS A BUDDING ARCHITECT SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO WHILE HANDLING PROJECTS? WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU ARE THE DO'S AND THE DONT'S IN THIS FIELD?

Technical and working drawings is advocated. It minimizes wastages and repeat of services-skills. Know the materials pros and cons. Knowledge of specifications and grades. Services of other consultants and PMC. Knowledge of site construction and materials empowers one with practical knowledge, which is very vital. Estimation and cost control along with quality check is a matter of concern. Timely deliverance and pert charts also important. Think out of the usual in design.

  • MENTION FEW OF YOUR NOTABLE PROJECTS AND WHY THEY ARE CLOSE TO YOU.

Villas in northern India, Cushionkari, small spaces apartment in BKC, house for fashion retailer, film directors duplex, top comedians homes and more.

  • WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF INDIA'S ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? HOW IS DESIGNING DIFFERENT FROM THAT HERE IN INDIA THAN THAT IN OTHER COUNTRIES?

In foreign countries their E-LIBRARY is huge and accessible. Each professional is specialized, be it kitchen designer, window display designer or any other. India is JUGADU- we know all problems and solutions and handle all fields and together-adapt.

  • WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION IN DESIGN?

Many people have shaped my design sensibilities in terms of my inspiration. Daily design inspiration comes from artisans and crafts of India. India is the Kohinoor in terms of handskills.

  • WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVOURITE ARCHITECTURAL/DESIGN PIECES AROUND THE GLOBE?

It's nice to see women designers- Zaha Hadid. Geoffery Bawa the srilankan architect. Auroville architects closer to home turf. I am partial to architecture which also resonates art in its canvas. For instance, Le Corbusier’s design.

  • WHAT DO YOU LOVE DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT DESIGNING?

Painting, doodling, sketching and listening to soothing inspiring music, reading other architect's story and also learning a new skill too at times.

  • SHARE SOME OF YOUR VALUABLE ADVICE FOR OUR READERS TO GET INSPIRED OF.

Inspiration is all around us and you need to BE AWARE. Sensitive t the air to what the eyes see, to what ears hear and more. Spring board to inspiration can be music, art, movies, shopping in vegetable market anything.
