WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE ARCHITECTURE ?
Since my childhood, I was extremely passionate about designing spaces, furniture, rooms etc. I used to spend my school vacations buying interior/architecture magazines. I converted my hobby, my passion into my career.
WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?
I believe that a good design is that which strikes a perfect balance between a designer's choice, the client’s requirements and design taste and the overall functionality from the user perspective. And above all of this is the “WOW” factor for an observer of a designer’s creation.
WHAT IS THE MANTRA THAT YOU'VE RELIED ON IN BALANCING FUNCTION WITH AESTHETICS?
Functionality is followed by aesthetics in every design. Before we start designing for any client, we at JR Architects, spend a good amount of time to understand the client, his/her design taste, requirements, lifestyle, choice of colours, etc. The design starts only after we have this sufficient information. So there is no such challenge in achieving this balance if the designing goes through these steps.
TALK ABOUT THE SKILLS THAT HAVE SERVED YOU BEST IN YOUR CAREER.
Business is about people. The more you are good in communication and understanding the vibe of the person in front of you, the more efficiently you will be able to design for him or her. The immense network of friends and acquaintances around me has helped me grow in my business. Having come from a background which is remotely related to construction and architecture, it was very difficult initially to get clients. I overcame this hurdle only by networking and meeting people from different fields.
WHAT ARE THE THINGS A BUDDING ARCHITECT SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO WHILE HANDLING PROJECTS? WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU ARE THE DO'S AND THE DONT'S IN THIS FIELD?
Never run behind money. A good work portfolio will itself make money run behind you. Always focus on the quality of your work. Be the best in what you are doing.
MENTION FEW OF YOUR NOTABLE PROJECTS AND WHY THEY ARE CLOSE TO YOU.
There is this 3 BHK residential project which we did in Chembur in 2016. The client was just an online enquiry who was about to cancel his contract with us at the start of the project because we were unable to attend him due to tremendous workload and international trips. However, after the completion of the project, the client was awestruck by our work. He also signed another contract to work with us for his bungalow project and referred us to many more other people from his network. He gave us a freehand to design whatever we want, however we want. We developed a big trust factor in designs and financial aspects. He was up for any challenge with us, one of which was having a water fountain in the kitchen which would run from the ceiling to the wall behind the kitchen platform.
Another one is the first project of our firm. The client had promised us a prize amount if he likes our services and yes we received that amount after the completion of the project above our fees. Again an internet enquiry, turned into a very beautiful bond of trust and friendship.
WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION IN DESIGN?
I like Architect Zaha Hadid’s work. Her work is truly a masterpiece!
WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVOURITE ARCHITECTURAL/DESIGN PIECES AROUND THE GLOBE?
All of Architect Zaha Hadid’s creations, the Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright and all the great historic monuments of Maratha and Rajput architecture in India.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT DESIGNING?
I am travelling, listening to music or spending quality time with my people while sipping a cup of coffee.
SHARE SOME OF YOUR VALUABLE ADVICE FOR OUR READERS TO GET INSPIRED OF.
Do only what you love to do.
Likewise never ever forcibly design for any client. I remember even refunding back the advance amount to few of our clients because we were not convinced with their approach. Be so good at your work that your work should speak for you.
